Dertig Swakopmunders is haweloos gelaat ná hul plakkershuis in Mondesa afgebrand het.

Die vyf gesinne wie se huisie deur vlamme verswelg is, bestaan uit 20 kinders en 10 volwassenes. Hulle bly tans in tente op die erf waar hul woning nog tot Dinsdag gestaan het.

George Olivier het namens A Better Life Project ingespring om te help.

“Ek het op sosiale media gesien iemand vra vir hulp namens haar huishulp. Sy het gesê daar is sewe mense wat alles verloor het in die brand. Toe ek daar kom, het ek besef die skade is veel erger en het meer mense geraak as wat ek aanvanklik gedink het,” sê hy.

“Gelukkig het ek drie weke se voorraad vir sewe mense saam geneem. Ek het toe maar gesê hulle moet ons skenking tussen hulle verdeel tot ons weer kan help.”

Die slagoffers het ’n dringende behoefte aan komberse, kos en ’n dak oor hul kop voor daar met langtermynplanne begin kan word om hulle huisie te herbou.

Volgens die inwoners het die brandweer ook belowe om te help deur noodkospakkies te bring.

Adri Goosen, die hoof van die Swakopmund brandweer, het egter gesê die brandweer kan geen hulp verleen tot die brandverslag uitgereik is nie.

“Ons sal wel seker maak die kospakkies bereik hulle sodra ons die brandverslag gefinaliseer het,” het hy beaam.

Volgens Falencia Gaweses (39), ’n ma van ses kinders wat in die plakkershut gewoon het, het die krag kort voor die brand ontstaan het, afgeslaan.

“Ons het geen lont geruik nie,” het sy gesê.

Goosen het bevestig dat die voorlopige ondersoek toon dat die oorsaak van die brand aan elektriese probleme toegeskryf kan word.

Hermien en Hermanus Awarab, aan wie die eiendom behoort, het gesê dat almal wat nie tydens die brand by die werk was nie, hulle gelukkig buite die struktuur bevind het.

Lisina Gawises (27) is by die staatshospitaal op Swakopmund opgeneem. Die ma van twee het tydens die brand rook ingeasem.
