Die Pupkewitz Ope Atletiekkompetisie was ’n groot trekpleister vir jong atlete landswyd.

“Die kinders is honger vir atletiek,” het atletieklegende Frank Slabbert, wat die geleentheid bygewoon het, gesê.

Slabbert het ook met trots oor die atletiekbaan by die Vineta-sportstadion gesels.

“Die gras groei hoog by die Onafhanklikheidstadion. Ons is bevoorreg om so ’n netjiese baan te hê.”

Die jong klomp se lus vir lekker atletiek is bevestig deur die deelnamesyfers wat verdubbel het sedert die vorige Pupkewitz Ope Atletiek in Maart vanjaar.

Tóé het ongeveer 130 atlete deelgeneem en by die pas afgelope byeenkoms het 519 jong talente hul staal kom wys.

Tog het die hoë bywoningsyfer vir die organiseerders ’n logistieke uitdaging meegebring. Organiseerder Hennie Horn het egter gesê hulle kon daarin slaag om nie meer as 92 persone gelyktydig op die baan te hê nie.

Horn wou aanvanklik deelnemers wat 800 punte op die ISS-skaal behaal het, as die beste van die dag aanwys. Weens die uitstekende prestasie van deelnemers, moes hy sy verwagtinge verhoog.
