Alternatiewe roete vir lorries oor feestyd

Die minister van werke en vervoer, John Mutorwa, het die gebruik van afleweringsvoertuie en busse met ’n gewig van meer as 5 ton op die B2-hoofpad tussen Walvisbaai en Swakopmund tydelik verbied.

Die verbod is reeds vanaf 19 November van krag.

“Ek doen dus ’n beroep op alle belanghebbers om te verseker die C34-pad word op die vereiste standaard in stand gehou en die nodige padverkeerstekens is aangebring,” het Mutorwa in ’n brief op 17 November aan die verkeershoof Eben Platt en die uitvoerende hoof van die munisipaliteit, Muronga Haingura, gesê.

Daar word van vragmotorbestuurders verwag om die C34-pad tussen Swakopmund en Walvisbaai, alombekend as die Duin 7-pad, as ’n alternatiewe roete vanaf 19 November 2021 tot 31 Januarie 2022 te gebruik.

Hierdie stap is ’n jaarlikse instelling om opeenhopings en padongelukke gedurende die feesseisoen op die B2-pad tussen Walvisbaai en Swakopmund te voorkom.

Die verbod is ingevolge artikel 73 (1)(a) en (b) van die Padverkeers- en Vervoerwet van 1999 (Wet 22 van 1999) wat bepaal die minister het die mag om verkeer in die algemeen of enige spesifieke klas verkeer op ’n openbare pad of gedeelte van so ’n pad te verbied, te beperk, te reguleer of te beheer, en/of enige openbare pad of gedeelte daarvan as ’n openbare pad vir ’n bepaalde klas voertuig aan te wys.

Die ou 46 km-soutpadoppervlak van die C34 is tot snelwegstandaard (dubbelbaan) opgegradeer teen ’n koste van N$1,3 miljard as deel van ’n projek wat in 2016 van stapel gestuur is.
