Laurens Alberts Bester (15) succumbed to injuries he sustained after he was allegedly bumped by a tow-in vehicle in Swakopmund on Sunday.

NamPol’s regional crime investigation coordinator, deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, confirmed that a case of culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving was opened after the incident occurred.

Iikuyu said that the deceased who lived in Ocean View, told his parents that he was going to visit friends. He was on his way home at around 16:50 when the accident occurred.

“The driver of the vehicle he was travelling with used the back-route of the C34-Henties Bay-Swakopmund road and dropped the deceased off in the vicinity of Ocean View Shell. As he was crossing the road, Bester was struck by a tow-in vehicle that was travelling from Swakopmund towards Henties Bay. The vehicle also dragged the deceased over a distance.”

According to Iikuyu, the youngster was declared dead on the scene by Code Red medical personnel.

“The driver has a valid licence and was sober when the accident occurred,” Iikuyu said.
