Accident claims student’s life

Crime report

The Erongo regional police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and or negligent driving after a road accident occurred on the B2 road between Usakos and Karibib on Friday.

According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations coordinator, a driver making a U-turn on the road between Karibib and Usakos apparently caused the accident which claimed the life of a 21-year-old student on Friday at 12:00, about 13km from Usakos towards Karibib.

Iikuyu said that a double cab bakkie with three occupants including the driver was travelling from Karibib towards Usakos and made a U-turn after driving past the Kransberg turn-off.

“This is where the driver initially wanted to turn in. Without checking for any oncoming traffic, he made the U-turn and in the process, a Volkswagen GTi Golf with three occupants (coming from the direction of Usakos) crashed into the Isuzu bakkie.”

The VW GTi Golf veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times.

“A 21-year-old who travelled in the GTi sustained multiple serious injuries and was transported from Usakos state hospital to Windhoek where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday (13 March). The deceased was identified as Sunny Simeon and was apparently a student at NIMT. His next of kin have been informed,” Iikuyu said.

The driver (47) of the bakkie and his two passengers did not sustain any injuries. The driver of the GTi also sustained no injuries, while the other passenger sustained minor injuries.
