Hangana Hake Run stopped in its tracks

Athletic event rescheduled

02 July 2020 | Sports

Herman Theron; Hangana Seafood MD; “The rapid increase in Covid-19 cases … has left us with no choice but to call off the event.”

One of the largest events on the athletics calendar, the Hangana Hake Run & Ride, has also fallen victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event, which was slated for 3 October 2020, was postponed until 2 October 2021 according to the organisers.

This is the first time in the event’s 37-year history that it will not take place.

Hangana Seafood, a subsidiary of the Olthaver & List Group, said in a statement issued today that the rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in Walvis Bay has left the organisers no other choice but to call off the event.

“I trust that our participants and stakeholders will appreciate the fact that we have to put safety first. Our priority remains the health and safety of our participants, the protection of our staff, volunteers, suppliers, and the broader coastal community,” said Herman Theron, Hangana Seafood managing director.

The annual sporting event enjoyed by an estimated 1000 local and international participants, is pivotal for athletes aiming to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.

Both the Two Oceans and the Comrades were cancelled this year.
