Entries for the first season of the Welwitschia Music Production (WMP) Ma /Gaisa Idol competition closed on 15 January.

According to WMP executive Stephen Naruseb, the aim of the singing competition is to find new talent and to promote the Ma /Gaisa genre until it becomes similar to a national theme. “We have a serious identity crisis in our country and I want to destroy it. We love and are so proud of other country’s things. [That is why] we want to create an internationally recognisable music style,” he said.

The competition required participants to send a Whatsapp video of between one and two minutes of them singing their favourite Ma /Gaisa song.

The competition will be judged by two Ma /Gaisa musicians as well as two members of the public.

Asked about what kind of singer they are looking for, Naruseb said he would like to have someone like the late Phura Duwe, who was the former’s favourite musician.

“He made Ma /Gaisa popular amongst Namibians. He did not necessarily have the best voice, but he was a great entertainer and performer. That is the kind of people I want,” he said.

The competition will progress to a top three round, who will each get the opportunity to produce a single with three top producers. The eventual winner will win a recording deal with these producers to record a full length album.

The deal includes marketing, distribution as well as promotion of their music for a year and is worth N$100 000.

Naruseb thanked the National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) who availed a grant of N$30 000 to WMP as part of the Covid-19 artist relief fund.
