Five armed robbers are on the run after hitting a cash in transit vehicle at a business in Walvis Bay earlier today.

Erongo police are on the hunt for the suspects involved in the armed robbery that took place at Pupkewitz Megabuild in the harbour town.

According to Inspector Ileni Shapumba, the unit commander for community affairs in the Erongo region, the incident occurred at about 09:00.

"It is alleged that, five male suspects of which two were armed with firearms attacked Southern Cross Security guard officers while they were busy removing a cash box they took from the business. One suspect pointed the driver with a firearm, while the other suspects attacked and took two firearms (a 38 special pistol and 32 Ruby Revolver) and the cash boxes from the other security guards.”

Shapumpa confirmed that the cash boxes were picked up from seven different shops.

“The suspects drove-off in a white Volkswagen Polo, with a fake registration number and tinted windows.
The items stolen include cash to the value of about N$ 943 616.84.”

Shapumba said that nobody has been arrested yet.

“N$28 616.84 was recovered which was left in the cash in transit vehicle. A cellphone that belongs to one of the suspects was found at the scene and the search is on to trace and arrest him."
