After the easing of travel restrictions, many Namibians used the past long weekend to take a mini break, and thanks to the countless discounts that many establishments are currently offering, some were able to afford luxury accommodation for the first time.

To promote local tourism, many establishments are using slogans like “Local is Lekker” and “Staycation”.

In many cases, SADC residents only pay 50% of the normal rates, while other luxury lodges have reduced tariffs by 65% or more.

For this reason, the Etosha National Park was a particularly popular destination with Namibia Wildlife Resorts charging N$600 per night for a room, while camping was an affordable N$100 per person per night.

Many Namibians also travelled to the central coast, as angling is permitted again. Huge discounts where also available here. At the Strand Hotel at the Mole, a night cost N$650 per person, which is significantly less than before the corona crisis.

Leisure and tourism activity service providers also joined the initiative, drastically reducing prices, so much so that many Namibians treated themselves to a desert tour or catamaran trip.
