Swakopmund-based singer Lin-Mari Coetzee won the latest season of the Voice of Namibia singing competition held in the capital recently.

Having been a runner-up in the previous season, Lin-Mari went a step further by claiming the ultimate prize during the grand finalé, with a cover version of the Demi Lovato song “Anyone”. “It still feels unreal; I am trying to wrap my head around it,” she said.

By winning the competition, Lin-Mari went home with a N$8 000 cash prize sponsored by Essential Labour Solutions and a weekend for two at Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge valued at N$11 000.

According to the “The fool” hitmaker, she is ready to release two more songs before the year ends. She hinted that one of the songs will be in her mother tongue – Afrikaans, while the other will be in English.

Lin-Mari has over 20 songs which have been written to the tune of the piano. She started playing the instrument at the age of 10.
“My plan is to release an album.”

She possesses a Grade 5 in classical singing, which is a UNISA (University of South Africa) music qualification that ends at grade 8.

The finalé was contested by eleven singers. Walvis Bay-based singer John-Raymond “JR” Cupido clinched the second place while Bernadine Goliath took third spot. One of the judges, Savannah Collins, said the level of singing was superb. “It was fantastic. Everyone really stepped up and all of the judges were blown away. We really have amazing talent in Namibia,” she said. The other judges were Lomine Vermeulen, Theodore Cooksen, Claudine Nelson, Nadia Hanssen and Heiko Doedens.
