Well-known radio presenter Wilzahn Gelderbloem (26) also known as “Dubz”, was nominated for the 2020 Simply You Magazine Lifestyle and Fashion Awards (SYMLAFA) scheduled to take place next month.

The bubbly radio personality said that she if she wins, she will dedicate her award to everyone who voted for her and believed in her.

“[My work] has kept me grounded and connected to my roots; it has allowed me to express myself in a way that Swakopmund and Walvis Bay residents will get you know. This includes the mannerisms, sayings and other things. Plus the coast is known to produce super talented people,” she said.

Gelderbloem, who spent her childhood up at the coast, said that she is honoured to be nominated for the Favourite Female Presenter award.

“The awards and I have a bit of a history, so it came as a bit of a surprise, but I am honoured, nonetheless,” she said.

Having grown up in both Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, she attributes her artistic quality to the two towns.

“The coast was always home. My grandmother’s house, which is my childhood home, is in Swakopmund and I was born there as well.”

Dubz, who presents the Urban Fix with Tha Big Homie (Kaycee Butshe), said she found out about her nomination on Instagram.

“I got a tag and a mention, and checked it out.”

Outspoken

Her professional journey started when she entered a radio competition in 2015.

“I had to read something on air and I won N$1 000. A member of the production crew then called me back and asked if I could come in for a voice test for advertisements. A couple of months later, I heard about a vacancy at 1FM (now known as Nova) who needed a radio presenter. I applied and got the job.”

However, a month into training, she had to leave to film a movie.

“Luckily my job was still waiting for me when I returned. I started out doing an evening show from 18:00 to 22:00, then quickly moved to the Breakfast Show from 06:00 to 10:00. I then moved over to our sister station, Fresh FM, in 2017, where I am still employed,” she said.

Tha Big Homie and Dubz’ show, The Urban Fix, which used to be aired from 09:00 to 12:00, gained so much popularity that it was moved to the breakfast slot from 06:00 to 09:00 in 2018.

Encouragement

She encourages aspiring radio presenters to never let anyone dim their shine or to limit themselves.

“Enjoy every moment of your journey. Radio is not a job. It is a lifestyle.”

She also presents Dubz Local Hitlist. The show, which is a top ten countdown of current and trending local hits voted for by the public, takes place every Saturday at 15:00.

The other presenters who have been nominated for the Favourite Female Radio Presenter award are Delila Katanga, Tanya Radzwa and Ndapewa Ambambi.
The winner will be decided by the public, who are required to vote for their favourite.
The 2020 Simply You Magazine Lifestyle and Fashion Awards are scheduled to take place on 1 September at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) in Windhoek.
