A number of breakthroughs were made with regard to the spate of robberies which occurred in Omaruru recently.

At the same time numerous persons were also arrested for possession of drugs during stop-and-search operations in the area.



Erongo regional police commander commissioner Andreas Nelumbu sent a special team of police officers from different units and sub-divisions to Omaruru after numerous robberies occurred between 8 and 15 January.

Members of the police reservists from Omaruru joined this team and assisted with investigations which involved searching for possible suspects and the recovery of stolen items.

The team successfully solved three robbery cases, arrested five suspects and recovered many stolen items including one firearm, which was used in the commission of a housebreaking. The team also arrested another four suspects between 15 and 19 January.

The recovered revolver was stolen during a robbery which took place on 4 July 2018 about 03:00 at erf no. 312 B, Kompaneno Street, Omaruru.

On the occasion a suspect armed with a knife unlawfully and intentionally gained entrance to a premises, tied up the complainant and demanded money. The suspect allegedly opened the safe and removed two 38 Special revolvers with a combined value of N$18 000 and N$900 cash. The suspect (41) was charged and appeared in the Omaruru magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Two persons were arrested for possession of drugs (cannabis, mandrax and crack cocaine).

Police searched and discovered a mandrax tablet and one ballie of cannabis on Thaley Tjiondo (43). He appeared in court and was sentenced.

A male suspect (28) was arrested with two pieces suspected to be crack cocaine and 315 ballies of cannabis with an estimated value of N$4 680. The suspect is in custody (without bail) and the case was postponed until 25 March for further investigations.

One person (39) was arrested in Otjiwarongo for grabbing a cellphone from a woman.

Suspected stolen properties were found in the possession of a person. It was later discovered that the items were stolen during a housebreaking in Karibib.

Two of the suspects, Joseph Shikongo (42) and Simon Nelundu Shilongo (41), appeared in Omaruru magistrate’s court on Monday. The case was postponed to 23 February for formal bail application.

A man (33) was also arrested for possession of cannabis in Omatjete. Police officers confiscated 405 ballies and 8 plastics bags of cannabis with a total weight of 1, 8 kg and an estimated value of N$ 18 000 from the suspect during a police operation conducted on the Omatjete-Omaruru gravel road.
