Collapsing wall kills worker

Police confirmed an incident that claimed the life of a 35-year-old resident of Swakopmund.

According to inspector Ileni Shapumba, the driver (31) of a bus belonging to DM Railway Construction hit a boundary wall of the company property on Thursday.

He said that whilst driving out of the company’s yard with the intention of turning into Theo-Ben Gurirab Street, the driver accidentally hit the boundary wall with the rear of the bus.

“The wall collapsed on top of two men standing close to it,” Shapumba said.

The two men were seriously injured and admitted at Welwitschia Private Hospital in a critical condition.

“Alfeus Karunga, a resident of Mondesa, Swakopmund, subsequently succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the incident. His next of kin have been informed. Frans Nandjembo (25), a resident of Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay, is still in hospital.”

A case of culpable homicide and a case of reckless/negligent driving was opened.

The police investigation continues.
