An 11-year-old boy drowned while swimming with his friends in a water pond in Karibib on Tuesday.

Inspector Ileni Shapumba, community affairs commander of the Erongo regional police, confirmed the incident, saying the drowning occurred at about 15:30 in a water pond located about a kilometre north from Karibib.

Shapumba said that Max !Owoseb drowned while he and four other minor friends (aged between 9 and 15) were swimming in a water pond.

“The deceased is said to have jumped into the pond even though his friends allegedly told him not to do so. After a brief struggle, he proceeded, dissapeared beneath the water and did not resurface. Members of the Namibian Police retrieved his body.”

!Owoseb’s body was transported to Usakos State Hospital for certification and an autopsy.

“His next of kin have been informed. The deceased was a grade 6 learner at Ebenezer Primary Boarding School in Karibib. He and his friends apparently left the hostel without permission.”
