The Swakopmund Arts Association hosts a ballet concert entitled Peter and The Wolf in a combined effort with Heather Kittel Ballet Tuition on 12 October.
“It’s quite a famous piece of music and I think we’re adding dimension to it by portraying it in dance,” Kittel said, adding that the experience includes tap dancing and excerpts from the Nutcracker and La Sylphide, a famous ballet from the romantic era.
“I think it will appeal to all ages – there’s nice music and a good story,” Kittel says of the performance that has been a year in the making. “They’re dance students, so they prepare for their exams between rehearsing for the show,” she says of the show, which has become an annual event between the school and the Swakopmund Arts Association.
About 40 of Kittel’s students are taking part in the show that features guest artist Vaida van der Merwe, who plays the role of Madge the Witch in excerpts from La Sylphide and Mother Ginger in one of the well-known dances from the The Nutcracker.
Kittel has about 50 years of ballet experience and the students in her school range from toddlers to adults, in levels from Pre Primary to Advanced.
“One doesn’t see live ballet in our part of the world anymore, so this is rather rare and our way of giving back to our audience.”
