Local Authorities conduct emergency simulation exercise

The local authorities in the Erongo region conducted an emergency simulation exercise to test the capacity of the disaster risk management committee.

The municipality of Walvis Bay, together with other local authorities in the Erongo region, held an emergency simulation exercise on the road between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund on Thursday morning.

Facilitated by officials from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, the exercise was held in conjunction with the municipalities of Henties Bay, Swakopmund, Arandis, Usakos, Omaruru and Karibib.

The exercise entailed emergency response teams responding to a distress call, involving a serious accident between a truck carrying petrol collided and a bus carrying passengers, that supposedly happened between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

The emergency simulation exercise was conducted to test the capacity of the established Local Authorities Disaster Risk Management Committees in terms of Disaster Management Cycle which forms part of the Emergency Reduction Strategies.

The Control Administrative Officer of the ministry of Urban and Rural Development Frederika Shigwedha said after the exercise, that the local authorities disaster risk management committees will come together again to evaluate what they observed at the simulation exercise. "This will help us advise each other better on how to save more lives by acting faster when an accident occurs."

Speaking to Erongo24/7, the deputy minister of Urban and Rural Development Nathalia /Goagoses, described the simulation exercise as a very real and emotional experience. "I am very pleased with the response time of all the emergency response teams. The fire was extinguished successfully and all the people that were injured, had been attended to speedily. Hence, I would like to thank the Disaster Management team of the Erongo region, and members of all the participating municipalities.
