A newly registered non-governmental organisation, National Mental Health Care Namibia, will have its official launch ceremony in the form of a Boxing Exhibition Night slated for 23 July 2022 at the MTC Dome, in Swakopmund.

The founder of National Metal Health Care Namibia, Cathy Kambanda, explained that the organisation was established with the aim to assist Namibians with mental health problems as well as to promote good mental health and well-being amongst the Namibians. "Namibia’s suicide rate has been increasing and therefore the call to raise awareness around the social stigmas and ambiguity of suicidal behaviours are resounding louder and louder. We focus on suicide prevention, depression assistance and helping rape victims. Therefore, we aim to launch not only our 24-hour helpline, but introduce the organisation which is ready to help fellow Namibians.”

Based on statistics provided by the Namibian police - through the ministry of health and social services - 745 Namibians took their own lives over a period of 18 months - between January 2020 and June 2021. This is an average of 1.4 suicides daily.

The NGO have partnered with with the Erongo Boxing Federation and Namibian professional boxers such as the renowned Harry Simon, Paulus Moses, Vikapita Meroro and Paulus Ambunda as well as comedian and socialites, Milton Xuro and Leonard Witbeen who will all be competing under various themes in an exciting and adrenaline-filled Boxing Bonanza.

Simon and Meroro will box out depression while Ambunda versus Moses will box out rape. Xuro versus Witbeen will box out suicide. There will also be ten bouts by amateur boxers from the Erongo Boxing Federation.

Among the invited speakers are the CEO of Swakopmund municipality, Alfeus Benjamin, representatives from the Ministry of Health and Social Services and mental health and sports activists who will all unite to sound a call to destigmatize the fight against suicide and depression.
