Shell, TotalEnergies start drilling appraisal wells

News in short
Mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo has confirmed that the companies that discovered oil in Namibia have started drilling appraisal wells.

Speaking to Namibian Sun yesterday, he said: “It’s common knowledge that both Shell and TotalEnergies have discovered oil off our coast and they are now busy drilling appraisal wells”.

Appraisal wells are drilled only when a discovery is made, with the motive of assessing the size and viability of the reservoir.

Both companies announced earlier this year that they had made "significant" discoveries offshore Namibia, and are currently making assessments.

Consultant Wood Mackenzie estimated that Namibian discoveries could contain about 6.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent of recoverable reserves. The discoveries could double Namibia’s gross domestic product by 2040, experts said.
