A 34-year-old man burned to death inside his shack in the DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund on Thursday morning.

The tragic incident happened a few hours before another dozen shacks were destroyed by a blaze elsewhere in Mondesa.

According to a police incident report, the first fire happened around 01:00. It is alleged that the one male occupant (63) woke up to the smell of fire. He went outside to investigate and saw his shack was burning from the roof outside.

He rushed back inside to wake up his son, Kafo Simeon (34), who had a coughing fit because of the smoke. He tried to save his son and his shack. All he could do was to try and extinguish the fire by pouring water but the rapid spread of the flames overwhelmed his efforts.

The Swakopmund Fire Brigade responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire but it was too late to save the son. Simeon burned to death. The ghetto and its contents was destroyed by the fire.

The cause of fire is still unknown and being investigated, said police sources.
