Man dies after drug use

A man (33) died after he smoked crack cocaine in Swakopmund.

According to Inspector Ileni Shapumba, the unit commander for community affairs in the Erongo region, the man and his friend (23) were found unconscious by a passerby.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, at around 12:00 to 14:00, the two men were found by the passer-by unconscious and were taken to the Swakopmund State Hospital. According to the deceased’s friend, he went to the cemetery to smoke mandrax, but he was allegedly caught with the deceased while smoking rocks (crack cocaine).”

“At this point, the deceased allegedly offered him rocks, which he accepted and blacked out before he finished smoking. He regained consciousness later when he and his friend were in the hospital.”

The deceased passed away Monday morning around 01:00.

“Nothing was found on the deceased. No foul play was suspected. The survivor was discharged from the hospital. He was taken to Mondesa Police Station for further investigation.”

The next of kin of the deceased person was informed. He was identified as Donoven Uhuru Haraseb.

His body was taken to the Walvis Bay Police mortuary for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

“No Inquest docket has been opened yet pending the outcome of the investigation. Investigations into the matter continue.”

The inspector furthermore added that this incident follows a similar case in which three people reportedly passed away in a similar manner on 1 September 2022 in Mondesa Policing Area.

”Information given to the Police suggests the use of drugs. Police have however conducted post-mortem examinations in both incidents and investigations are still on going. We will inform the public as soon as the outcome reports become available.”

He issued a warning to potential drug users and dealers.

“While such acts remain unlawful, there is danger suspected. We urge the communities to report any information on drugs to the police for action.”
