Ten train carts derailed near Arandis on Thursday, resulting in one man being injured.

According to information received by emergency services, the accident happened around noon. It is alleged that the carts were left stationary on a side track, east of the Rossing mountain towards Swakopmund. "It looks like their brakes came off and they started rolling down the railway line before derailing," said Aubrey Oosthuizen of Code Red medical services.

The derailment happened at an area where people were working on a railway culvert. "Fortunately they all managed to get out of the way just in time. We had to transport one man to hospital for some injuries," Oosthuizen said.

Abigail Raubenheimer, TransNamib spokesperson, told Erongo 24/7 that no locomotive was involved. She confirmed the incident occurred between the Rossing and Namib Station between 11:00 and 12:00. "TransNamib immediately activated its emergency response plan and the line between Swakopmund and Arandis has been closed. We sincerely apologise to our stakeholders and customers for any inconvenience caused and we are working to restore the service on the line as soon as possible," she said, adding that TransNamib launched an investigation into this incident.
