Man dies in front-end loader accident

A 26-year-old man died while another man (19) sustained injuries during an accident involving a front-end-loader at a mine in Uis on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the incident. "It happened at a small lithium stone mine in the Dam 5 area. The driver of a front-end loader was busy working with two other colleagues when the machine started to slide-down a mountain on which it was operating. The passengers fell from the machine and Richie Twatiana Naobeb passed away on the scene. His next of kin were informed and the body was taken to Uis State clinic mortuary for death certification and storage. The other injured passenger was taken to the Omaruru State hospital for medical treatment and he is in a stable condition."

According to Iikuyu, the driver was not found at the scene and an investigation to trace and arrest him have been launched. "He allegedly packed his bag after the incident and left the mine to an unknown destination."
