Windhoek • Evany van Wyk

A tough but entertaining school’s hockey league came to an end on Saturday, when Windhoek High School’s first girls’ team beat Windhoek Gymnasium 3-1 at the WHS hockey fields. At the time of going to print, the boys hadn’t begun play yet.

Earlier the day, the Keetmanshoop Private School girl’s hockey team took on opponents Elnatan Private School. Both teams travelled a great distance to compete in the league and they worked hard to prove their worth. The crowds went wild during their nail-biting match that ended in a penalty shootout. Elnatan managed to score a goal at the last minute and won the game 2-1.

The Windhoek High School hockey teams also had an interesting matchup in the second league, as the 2A and 2B girl’s teams played against each other. Much shouting, chanting and excited chatter could be heard a mile away as the spectators were frantically engaged in the match. The 2A team dominated the match, while the 2B team struggled to score a goal. At the end of the match, the 2B team was defeated by 6-0.

However, it was the girl’s first league match that was the highlight of the day.

Windhoek Gymnasium and Windhoek High School made quite the uproar as the two long-time sport rivals delivered an intense and riveting match. The coaches were on their feet and readily giving advice from the sidelines. WHS took the first goal of the match and remained in control until Windhoek Gymnasium finally scored a goal in the last second of the third quarter.

However, the WHS ladies were stronger, finishing with a score 3-1.

“It was such a fun match. It was also tough, but we really wanted it,” said WHS’s captain, Carien van Rooyen, adding how incredibly proud she was of her team and the trust they have placed in God.
