Team Woermann clinches squash league

The winners of a coastal squash competition were decided by the narrowest of margins.

11 August 2019 | Sports

The Namib Diesel Social League Trophy holder for 2019 is Woermann Brock Building & Hardware Supplies.

The winning team was also named as the Best Dressed Team. Danie Greeff, Stefan van Tonder, Dirk Bosman, Trevor Heath, Chelsea de Gouveia and Christelle Eiman managed to double their lead (139 points) to 2 pts ahead of Namib Diesel on 137 pts. Gateway Logistics finished in third position with 117 pts.

Closer it could not have got. What a finish to a league that was more than enjoyed by every member of the seven teams that entered the competition.

It is definitely ranked one of the best, if not the best, event of the year due to the awesome final round of squash experienced with only 1 point separating the top two teams.

The penultimate round really had suspense, drama and concern of what was going down at the other courts.

This is the case when matches are being played at different venues. It can just be imagined how the texts were flying back and forth.

Special thanks to Namib Diesel for their continued sponsorship of this popular annual event to which players look forward to with enthusiasm each year. For now it's back to the Namib Diesel Social Doubles League which commenced on Wednesday, 31 July.

The prize-giving was held straight after play with Namib Diesel's Jaco de Witt presenting the prizes and trophies to all the relevant teams and players.

Awards

Michail Pretorius was named Most Popular Reserve, Sharde Fisher received the Won all Matches prize, Chelsea de Gouveia was named Most Improved Lady and Joe Hermann Most Improved Male. Chantel de Gouveia displayed the best sportsmanship among the ladies and Devon Savage the best sportsmanship among the males.

Walvis Bay Ship Chandlers consisting of Michael Gruhn, Christopher Hill, Henning du Plessis, Patrick Quinn, Arlene Visser and Luther Mostert was named as the team with the best spirit. Supatronix was named Most Consistent Team and Namib Diesel as the Most Social Team. The “Uilskuiken” Trophy went to Leslie Bosman.
