The aim of the one-day event was to select the athletics team to participate in the Engine Prestige Competition and the Coca-Cola National Championships as well as represent Namibia at the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Athletics games slated for April and May this year in eSwatini.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the competition in Oshakati on Saturday, chairperson of the NSSU in Oshana, Johnny Martin, said that all 14 regions are divided into four sub-national teams where athletes are chosen based on the qualification standards they are participating in for each age group. “Once athletes are chosen at sub-national level, they will compete in the Prestige Athletics competition in the Khomas region on 23 March, where the best will be chosen to represent Namibia at Cossasa.”
In the past, each region was required to submit its best athletes, however the option of sub-dividing the 14 regions allows for better potential and gives athletes a broader platform as different schools from clusters come together and select the extra outstanding athletes,” he said. - Nampa
