Street and traffic lights planned for Usakos

The B1 drive-through road in Usakos could soon feature streetlights and possibly traffic lights at a later stage.

Usakos

The Roads Authority (RA) has granted approval earlier this year to the Usakos town council to install and commission traffic lights on the B1 road with costs to council.

The availability of funding is however curtailing this initiative in the town with more than 9147 inhabitants.

The management committee recommended that council approach the National Planning Commission, the National Road Safety Council and the Motor Accident Vehicle Fund as strategic financing partners.

This will enable council to through internal structures appoint and compensate a consulting engineer for the design, installation and commission of the traffic lights in Usakos at junctures recommended by the RA.

The designs and related documents will be submitted to the RA for consideration and if approved a service provider would be compensated to supply, install and commission the traffic lights and related accessories. The remaining stock (equipments and material) will be kept for future or imminent repairs and maintenance purposes.

It was also recommended that council through national appropriation by the National Assembly and in coordination with the National Planning Commission and Namibian police considers the possibility of installing and commissioning highly visible street cameras for the purpose of speed control at the eastern and western entrances of Usakos.

It was further suggested that council makes budgetary provisions for the implementation of the project in its statement of estimated income and expenditure if and only after funding is secured and guaranteed by the NPC and NARSC or MVAF.

Council also expressed appreciation for approval granted by the Erongo Regional Electricity Distribution Company to install and commission streetlights alongside the B1 road in Usakos extending to welcoming signs erected at the entry and exit points of the town.

Manfred Weskop responsible for HR, stakeholder engagement and media liaisons at council confirmed that this process could commence and will be completed in the new Erongo RED book year after July.
