Slangboer bring sy maats fees toe

Dertien slange, waaronder van die giftigste in Afrika, gaan aan die Hentiesfees deelneem. Moenie skrik nie, sê Sean Naudé, ‘n Windhoeker wat met die reptiele gaan speel. “Slange is daar om mense te help”.

Die 44-jarige “slangboer”sê hy was maar elf jaar oud toe hy met sy eerste slange kennis gemaak het. Hy het as seun in die huis van dierebeskermers grootgeword. In die 33 jaar van sy samesyn met slange, was hy nog nooit gebyt nie. “Kom kyk gerus hoe ek een van die outjies oor sy koppie streel.”

Sean sê feesgangers het niks om te vrees nie, omdat die nodige veiligheidsmaatreëls vir sy vertonings getref gaan word.

Onder die 13 slange is ‘n boomslang, die giftigste spesie wat in Afrika aangetref word. “Hy’s erger as ‘n mamba,” sê Sean. Die boomslangmannetjie is groen en die wyfie is grys. Volgens hom word boomslange dikwels vir mambas aangesien.

Nog ‘n deelnemer aan die Hentiesfees gaan ‘n Kaapse kobra wees. Onder die kobrasoorte is dit die giftigste slang op die vasteland. Ewe seldsaam is ‘n Angolese kobra van 2,57 meter. Sover dit Sean se kennis strek is dit die langste Angolese kobra wat nog in Namibië aangetref is. Hy het die slang in een van Windhoek se woonbuurte gevang nadat ‘n noodoproep van ‘n vrou ontvang is. Op Hentiesbaai self het hy al ‘n sebraslang gevang.

Sy waarnemings is ook dat sekere slangsoorte hul gebied uitbrei. Een van die slange is die Kaapse kobras wat gaandeweg al hoe dieper in Namibië beweeg het. Hy vermoed die slange is “rylopers” wat in die onderstelle van motors deur niksvermoedende bestuurders na nuwe plekke gedra word.

Sean sê slange het ‘n bestaansreg omdat hulle mense help teen plae wat deur muise en rotte gebring word. Gevalle is bekend waar rotte en muise aan elektriese koorde gevreet en kortsluitings brande veroorsaak het. “Elkeen het ‘n bestaansreg, ook slange,” sê hy.
