Scorecard nearly finalised

11 March 2019 | Fishing

The ministry of fisheries and marine resources is determined to ensure that fishing quota allocations are based on performance of right holders, and not just historical entitlements.

The ministry is also serious to take value addition to a new level this year. To this effect a scorecard was approved for implementation by cabinet.

“The scorecard is here and the ministry is now finalising the weights to the criteria before gazetting which will be done within the next few months. The industry will have to account annually through the scorecard, and officials have to account for how they are managing this important sector of our economy,” minister Bernard Esau emphasised in his 2019 annual ministerial address to the fishing industry in Walvis Bay.

Esau also expressed the hope that the industry had taken advantage of a one-year period in which the ministry consulted to invest and create jobs in order qualify for quotas.
