The Erongo regional council donated drills, overlocker sewing machines and car wash equipment to seven beneficiaries on Wednesday.
The council annually avails N$130 000 to the seven constituencies in the region under the Constituency Development Fund.
Chief regional officer Ludumilla Doëses explained the fund was established to support small and medium enterprises.
“Local beneficiaries apply for funding at their respective constituency offices with their business plans, where the Constituency Development Committee selects the most viable projects. These selected projects’ business plans are then forwarded to the regional head office in Swakopmund, where the procurement is done. We do not assist through the means of cash but through equipment.”
The selection of the recipients is done on the basis how these projects develop infrastructure in the region, the creation of jobs as well the economic value.
Charles Neidel, from the Erongo regional council, said for the past two years the council has assisted eight beneficiaries.
“We are satisfied thus far with the progress the previous beneficiaries have made as we do regular follow-ups with them. If some of them do not progress as well, we can hand over the equipment to another beneficiary.”
One of the beneficiaries, Romanus Haraseb, who is a car wash owner, expressed his gratitude to the council.
“We promise to make good use of this equipment for the benefit of our community.”
