The management committee of the Erongo regional council approved the provision of N$165 000 for the construction of two toilets in the Uis settlement.
This follows after the chief regional officer of the Erongo regional council, Ludmilla Habate Doëses, made the request for the two toilets to be constructed for four homesteads in the settlement.
There are still four homesteads in the Uis settlement which utilise pit latrines or the bucket system and with hepatitis E outbreaks in the region, council is necessitated to construct modern toilets.
Architects from the maintenance directorate were tasked to design the two toilets and designed the facilities in such way that its is cost effective. The toilets have a shared wall and this makes the construction more economical.
The cost of each toilet as per annual bids amounts to N$82 140.20. The funds to construct the toilets will be defrayed from the 5% VAT refunds account of which N$ 28 646 527.69 is available.
The Erongo regional council has set itself the objective that access to improve sanitation in rural areas should increase from 25.5% in 2015 to 50%, and to decrease the proportion of population practicing open defecation from 71.5% in 2015 to 60% by 2022.
