Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu, NAMPOL: “We will deal with those drivers who are inconsiderate on our roads.”

Leandrea Louw - A total of 181 cases were reported in the Erongo region from 26 January to 4 January, during the nationwide launch of Operation Hornkranz.

The operation, which will end on 15 January, saw police officers along with Namibian Defence Force members patrolling various areas in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Karibib, which resulted in hundreds of weapons being confiscated.

These included pocket knives, scissors, pangas, a bolt cutter, fireworks, customised knives, a hammer, a saw and screw drivers. These weapons were confiscated during stop and search operations at night clubs, pubs and in the street.

According to commissioner Andreas Nelumbu, regional commander of the Erongo police force, these weapons were not used to harm people, but it was confiscated to prevent harm to people.

“What is the purpose of having a panga at a drinking place? Pocket knives have killed more people in this country than any other weapon. The main aim of this operation is to reduce criminal activity in the region and in the country.”

Nelumbu furthermore said that 181 motor vehicle accidents were reported in the region, in which 18 people were slightly injured, 10 seriously injured and 5 fatalities recorded.

“The youngest victim who died in a motor vehicle accident was 1 year and 8 months old, while the oldest was 49 years old.”

A total of 50 drinking and driving while under the influence of alcohol cases were also registered, with 51 people charged with driving under the influence.

He once again emphasised that drivers need to be safe on the roads. “At the pre-festive season briefing I made it clear that we will adopt a zero tolerance policy on road related offences. We will deal with those drivers who are inconsiderate on our roads. ”

Four suicides and two drownings were also reported. A child drowned in an oxidation pond in Uis early in December, while the body of Dexter Netha (19) who has been missing since 28 December was found washed ashore on the morning of 4 January. His body was found 1.8 kilometres from where the Sound of Summer festival took place. A post mortem investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Two cases of murder were opened.

“The one incident occurred in Spitzkoppe where a man was allegedly assaulted by his 21-year-old girlfriend and her sister with a pot and by kicking him. He died instantly.”

In another murder case, which might be converted to culpable homicide, a girlfriend had visited her boyfriend and got in a quarrel with him. The daughter of the boyfriend allegedly pushed the girlfriend and she fell on a rock, dying instantly. Investigations still continue.

Nelumbu concluded that it was a relatively quiet festive season and hopes it stays that way until the end of Operation Hornkranz.
