Helping hands reach out to elderly

17 December 2018 | Local News

Otis Finck - The St Petrus Helping Hands group treated more than 30 elderly persons and vulnerable children to a scrumptious meal and handed out gift packs at the Catholic Church hall in Narraville on Monday.

Father Berthold Heller opened the event with prayer. Mario Polster, chairperson of the parish council, welcomed the senior citizens and children.

He acknowledged the role of the Helping Hands group in showing the church care and spreading love.

Brother Andreas Petrus, a candidate for priesthood in his final year of study in South Africa, also attended the event. Petrus is on holiday in Namibia and will be based in Walvis Bay until the end of December.

Olivia Rieth entertained the guests with golden oldie hit songs such as “Love” by Nat King Cole, “I can’t help falling in love with you” and “Careless Whisper” at the occasion.

The St Petrus Helping Hands group, under the leadership of Laura Johannes, was established three years ago to provide food parcels to needy community members on a monthly basis.

The group members distribute food parcels to 28 needy families and also provide cooked meals once a week. This is made possible with assistance and sponsorship form the St Peters Catholic Church, Woolworths and private donors.
