Grumpy's fishing report
21 July 2019 | Fishing
Terrace Bay is in the news again this week.
It's not too often that I get reports from way up north. Catches of kob, galjoen and blacktail were made.
According to Braam, he caught kob and galjoen when the water had colour, and when the water turned clean, the blacktail arrived. He added that the kind of bait used didn't matter too much as blacktail devour both white mussel and sardines.
Good catches were also reported from just south of the Ugab river mouth right up to Cape Cross. Kob varied from pan size to about 65 cm. The perfect fish for a dish! We need to look after the fish stocks and put the ol' big 'un back to breed another year.
Doep se Gat and Horingbaai produced a lot of kob, with some blacktail. Mile 68, Sarah se Gat and Tolla also delivered some good fish.
Popeye produced a lot of galjoen but one had to keep going to get sized fish into the cool box.
Clinton and Lindie went fishing at Mile 72.
Now Clinton is a diehard fisherman that was longing to catch that big elusive steenbras.
Day after day, month after month he went in search of “ou dik lip”. He was on the mark last weekend and he got stuck into a big fish which peeled the line of his fishing reel.
A struggle ensued but Clinton eventually emerged victorious. The beast pulled the scales on 13 kg, a personal best! They also caught a few kob, blacktail and galjoen.
The ski boats from Swakopmund also caught good fish. Vierkantklip and Mile 6 were the preferable fishing grounds. The fish were of decent size (right up to 65 cm) with sardines as bait.
The shark anglers were also having their bit of fun with bronze whalers (copper shark) and spotties being landed regularly. They were biting on bonitos (bronzies) and mullet (spotties).
Tight lines until the next report!
