Uis - Erwin Leuschner

This year’s annual Fly In competition, which was once again hosted on the small landing strip in Uis, not only saw a record number of participants, but also the biggest formation flight recorded in the country’s history.

The event took place over the past weekend.

The Fly In is organised by the Light Sport and Amateur-build Aircraft Association of Namibia (Lisama) and is aimed at pilots of small aircraft to showcase their skills.

The Lisama team regards the past event as a huge success. A total of 56 airplanes, helicopters and gyrocopters were parked in Uis, and the number of competition participants saw 30 entries. “There were a lot of visitors too, more than in previous years,” said Heidi Snyman of Lisama.

During the competition the pilots took part in various skills tests and navigation as well as spot landing exercises.

The overall winner of this year’s competition were Matthias and Nadia Braune. Flippie Opperman (senior) came in second, followed by Mattthias Röttcher.

After the competitions many pilots entertained the visitors with acrobatic flights. Most notable was a formation flight, which had a total of six aeroplanes participating.
