Environmental certificates issued for dumping sites

OTJIMBINGWE

The Erongo regional council (ERC) has finally obtained environmental clearance certificates for the Otjimbingwe and Okombahe dumping sites.

The ERC constructed the two sites without the required certificates.

Due to the issuing of the certificates being a statutory requirement, the ministry of environment and tourism was consulted to conduct an environmental management plan to guide how refuse should be managed at the constructed sites.

A consultant was appointed in this regard. The first phase of the project was subsequently completed and resulted in the issuance of the required environmental clearance certificates for the two dumping sites.

The second phase involves obtaining an environmental certificate for a new Uis disposal site, as well as drawing up a decommissioning and rehabilitation plan for the old disposal site in the town.

The ERC must also address a number of shortcomings identified and rectify issues contained in a report from the consultant.
