Empowering youth through sport

The Hashtag Festival brings career guidance, a beauty pageant and sports together under one umbrella.

The second annual Hashtag Career Exhibition and Community Games saw learners from across the country come together for a festival of fun in the capital.

While the festival consisted of a number events, a highlight on the program was sport.

For the Community Games, around 350 learners from across the country participated in hockey, netball, chess, soccer, rugby as well as a quick quiz.

Learners from various schools from different regions formed teams, namely the Arabian Knights, Coastal Dolphins, Delta Lions, Pioneer Warriors, Etosha Ravens, Oshana Patriots, Windhoek Saints as well as the Highveld Cheetahs.

The Highveld Cheetahs were the overall winners of the Community Games ahead of the Windhoek Saints while the Arabian Knights and Pioneer Warriors shared third place.

The rugby champions were the Windhoek Saints, followed by Pioneer Warriors and the Highveld Cheetahs in third, while the plate winners were the Coastal Dolphins.

In boy’s hockey, Pioneer Warriors took first place ahead of the Windhoek Saints and the Highveld Cheetahs. The plate winners were the Coastal Dolphins. The hockey girls’ champions were Highveld Cheetahs, followed by the Windhoek Saints and the Coastal Dolphins in third. The plate winners were the Pioneer Warriors.

The Windhoek Saints were crowned soccer champions ahead of the Highveld Cheetahs in second place and the Pioneer Warriors in third. The Coastal Dolphins were the plate winners.

In chess, the Oshana Patriots scooped first place followed by the Arabian Knights.

In the 40m boy’s dash, first place went to the Highveld Cheetahs while the Oshana Patriots took first place for girls. Second place went to the Delta Lions and Coastal Dolphins for the boys and girls, respectively, while the Coastal Dolphins and Highveld Cheetahs took third spot for the boys and girls.

In the cheerleader dance-off, the Etosha Ravens scooped first place followed by the Arabian Knights in second and the Highveld Cheetahs in third.

Oshana Patriots were the quick thinkers in the Quick Quiz, with the Delta Lions in second place and the Pioneer Warriors in third.

Other highlights

The Hashtag Festival began on Wednesday with a career exhibition, where learners from Windhoek schools participated in talks and visited stalls at the Windhoek show grounds for career guidance and exposure to what Namibia has to offer in terms of careers and tourism.

Miss High School

Reschelle Beukes of Windhoek High School was crowned as Miss High School earlier this week. Her first princess is Tylo Blaauw from Windhoek Gymnasium Private School while Judite Correia of Walvis Bay Private High School is her second princess. Correia also won the titles of Miss Creative Wear and Miss Personality, while Beukes was also awarded the title of Miss Community as she pioneered the Mount View High School project in Windhoek. For this project, Beukes was able to donate a containerized classroom as well as much needed school supplies with the help form her school and sponsors. Miss Social Media was Sylvi Iipinge from Shaanika Nashilongo Secondary School.

Chamber choirs

Kuisebmond Secondary School once again scooped the Hashtag Festival Chamber Choir champion award, ahead of Jan Jonker and Swakopmund Secondary School in third place.

Other participating choirs were Academia High School and Hage Geingob High School.

According to the project coordinator of the Hashtag Festival, Octavia Tsibes, the aim of the event is to bring sport and education together. “It was a resounding success to bring the concept edutainment to life. We hope to see more schools join us next year.”
