Coastal clubs unite to assist injured players

Kudu Rugby Club organised a fundraising day in aid of an official and two injured players.

The Erongo Rugby Academy (ERA), Kudu Rugby Club (KRC) and the Swakopmund-based Vikings Rugby Club played friendly matches in Narraville to raise funds for Graham “Fanco” Swartz.

The former soccer and rugby player as well as coach underwent an operation and had a leg amputated recently. He is recovering at home in Narraville.

“I am doing fine. The operation went well and I am going in for regular check-ups at the Walvis Bay hospital,” said Swartz.

He also reiterated his commitment as team manager of Kudu Rugby Club.

KRC treasurer Donald De Koker said two local teams that were invited did not pitch and another sport event in town impacted the occasion in Narraville.

“The attendance was not satisfactory but besides that the day went well. The club will add to the funds generated on the day and distribute what’s available between Fanco and two other coastal players who suffered injuries during games recently.”

The tries flowed freely with Kudus defeating ERA 31-14 and the visiting Vikings 50-14.

The involved sides used the opportunity to remain active during a prolonged period of not playing any competitive club rugby. The matches also served as preparation for upcoming league matches.

KRC faced United in premier and reserve league matches and ERA played Vikings in a 1st West league match in Narraville yesterday. Unam took on Wanderers and Rehoboth took on Reho Falcon (derby) in premier and reserve league matches. Scores to be added in on Saturday.
