CCTV footage helps police

The Namibian police managed­ to trace and arrest two alleged­ robbers in Walvis Bay by using­ CCTV footage of the crime.

According to Erongo police deputy commissioner Erastus Ikuyu the two suspects, Gerson Kalombo and Linus Alweendo, broke into the vehicle of an American tourist which was parked at Seaside Rental in Nangolo Mbumba Drive on 14 June at 14:10.

“The suspects, who are both from Windhoek, smashed the back window of the rental car and stole two MacBook Pro laptops, and iPhone, three Samsung cell phones, four Go-Pro Hero cameras, three hard drives, 25 Micro SD cards and two Panasonic lenses valued at N$273 000,” he said.

According to Ikuyu, the incident was captured by a CCTV camera in the vicinity. The footage was used by the police to trace the suspects' getaway vehicle, a blue Toyota sedan.

The vehicle was found at the Tutaleni residential area of Walvis Bay along with the two suspects and the stolen items. All the stolen items were recovered.

Kalombo and Alweendo appeared in the Walvis Bay magistrate court on Monday and their case was postponed to 30 July. The accused were not granted bail.
