The fifth annual Husab Marathon took place at the Husab Road near the mine on Saturday, as more than a thousand athletes took part in the 42km marathon, 10km run and 5km fun run.

Paulus Iiyambo won the men’s 42km marathon in a time of 2:30:55 ahead of Jesaya Matheus, who finished the race second with 2:39:56 on the clock. Third place went to Kornelius Nghilyeendele in a time of 2:43:32.

The women’s 42km race was won by Alina Armas who crossed the finish line in 3:13:47 ahead of second placed Otilie Aimwaha who narrowly missed out as she clocked 3:14:11. Kirsty Brits’ grit and determination earned her a third place finish, having crossed the finish line with 3:55:43 on the clock.

Speaking at the prizegiving, the governor of the Erongo region and the patron of the Husab Marathon, Cleophas Mutjavikua, said his office is thrilled at being associated with the Husab Marathon, adding that the event is key to building relationships among contestants especially outside of work.

“The event is not only aimed at fitness, but also aimed at ensuring that the workers and their families socialise outside the workplace. Informal discussions are always necessary to build relationships among the citizens,” Mutjavikua said.

He added that the proceeds of the marathon are destined for a local community programme.
